Instead, Rivers will be staying put in his familiar territory in San Diego and Qualcomm Stadium — at least for one more season.

“Everybody, all the children, wife and myself are all pretty fired up to know we’re here at least another season and hopefully more beyond that,” Rivers told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s good news for sure. … It’s news because we were waiting on a decision. But obviously, we’re here as we have been. It’s good to know we get to make another run at it here.”

The Chargers reached an agreement Friday to share a stadium in Inglewood with the Rams in 2017. However, the team will remain in San Diego through the 2016 season as it attempts to land a new stadium deal. Chargers chairman Dean Spanos made it clear in a statement released Friday he wants to keep his team in San Diego.

Rivers agrees and hopes the 2016 home opener will be just as intense as the season finale, except this time he will come away with a Chargers victory.

“That emotion and that atmosphere, I know you can’t really recreate that from a ‘farewell’ sense,” Rivers said. “I know a lot of the emotion was built with that. But just the energy and feel in the stadium was crazy.

“Hopefully, there will be more of that. And I know winning will bring that, which we need to do more of. … Maybe it can be like, ‘Oh, we get to stay.’ So we will even more embrace and be excited about being here and, on the flip side, fans, too. This will re-energize them going into this next season.”

Rivers’ favorite target, Keenan Allen, took to Twitter to share his thoughts about the decision to stay in San Diego.
