The Witcher Netflix series has earned mixed reviews since it first premiered at the tail-end of 2019. However, Cavill’s performance as Geralt has consistently been one aspect of the show that has earned considerable praise. With Cavill considered such an important part of The Witcher Netflix series, it makes sense that many fans are worried his departure could effectively be the beginning of the end for the series.

It didn’t take long after the shock announcement that Cavill was being replaced as Geralt in The Witcher for fans to make a petition demanding that he stay in the role. The petition, created by Stef Ma, goes a step beyond asking Netflix to keep Cavill as Geralt, adding that Netflix should replace The Witcher writing staff as well. The petition has quickly grown in popularity, and it now has over 198,000 signatures. Assuming more people sign it at the rate they have been, then the Change.org petition to keep Henry Cavill as Geralt in The Witcher will have no trouble crossing 200,000 signatures. This will make it one of the top petitions on the entire Change.org site.

Of course, it’s highly unlikely that Henry Cavill will stay on as Geralt in The Witcher regardless of how many people sign the petition. One has to imagine that the ink is dry on the agreement that will see Liam Hemsworth take on the mantle of Geralt in The Witcher Season 4 onward, and so it’s far more complicated than many fans may think. Not only that, but Cavill has already issued a statement offering words of encouragement to Hemsworth, and he’s planning to reprise his role as Superman in the new James Gunn-led DCEU films.

Netflix has clearly invested a lot in The Witcher series. The first season was a huge success for the streaming service, leading to spin-offs to accompany the main show. It will be interesting to see if fans truly do leave with Cavill, or if they return to see Liam Hemsworth’s take on live-action Geralt of Rivia.

The Witcher is available to stream now on Netflix.
