Lifting the ban, though, would come with no assurance that baseball writers will bestow hall honors on Rose: he would have violated the game’s most sacred rule and lied about doing it. Still, time is running out on Rose’s candidacy. He’s eligible for the ballot for only two more years. (After that, his hall bid would be at the mercy of an idiosyncratic veterans’ committee.) Fessing up is a gamble, but it might be the only way to keep his dream alive.
